When does Babson convene a Hearing Board?
A Hearing Board is the typical option when a case may result in a separation from the College — loss of housing, suspension, or expulsion. It is composed of a nonvoting chair, two student members, and one faculty or staff member. For matters that won't lead to separation, a single Student Accountability Officer resolves the case in an Educational Conference. A student facing separation may also elect an administrative hearing instead of a board.
What standard of proof does Babson use?
Babson applies the preponderance-of-the-evidence standard in educational conferences, board hearings, and the gender-based misconduct process — meaning it is 'more likely than not' that a policy violation occurred. That is a much lower bar than the criminal standard, so a student can be found responsible on a close record. Careful factual presentation is essential at this threshold.
What happens to my grade during an academic-integrity case at Babson?
Until the matter is resolved, you receive an interim grade of Incomplete for the affected work or course, and you are not permitted to withdraw from the course while the case is pending — trying to do so can itself be charged as interference. If you are found not responsible, the work is graded with no penalty; if responsible, academic sanctions can range from a grade reduction up to failing the course with a transcript notation. These automatic holds make early guidance important.
How does Babson handle the use of AI?
Babson's Community Code expressly treats the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence — and using generative AI to obtain papers or answers — as cheating. Every academic-integrity allegation is designated Level 1, 2, or 3, which sets the minimum sanctions, and any repeat offense is automatically escalated to Level 2 or 3. Because AI-related cases can be charged at a high level, how the facts and your intent are presented really matters.
How do I appeal a Babson decision?
You must submit an appeal within five business days of the decision letter, on one of three exclusive grounds: a material error in the charge, investigation, or sanctioning process; genuinely new information that could not have been found earlier; or sanctions that are grossly disproportionate to the violation. Appeals are a deferential file review, not a re-hearing. Non-academic separation appeals go to the Dean of Campus Life and academic ones to the Associate Dean of Teaching — and the decision is final.
