Rachel Laubis, Title IX Advisor at AdvocatED

Rachel Laubis

Title IX Advisor, AdvocatED

ATIXA-certified Title IX Hearing Advisor with a law degree and a forensic psychology background, advising students through Title IX investigations and hearings.

Rachel Laubis advises students and families through Title IX investigations and hearings, from the notice of allegations to the appeal. She is a Certified Title IX Hearing Advisor through ATIXA, the body that trains and certifies the administrators running these proceedings, which means she has been taught the process from the same curriculum as the people deciding the case.

She holds a law degree from Brooklyn Law School with a certificate in criminal law, and an undergraduate degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She practises as an education advisor rather than as an attorney, and does not provide legal representation or legal advice. The legal training matters anyway: Title IX proceedings turn on procedure, on what a policy actually requires, and on whether a record supports the finding drawn from it.

Her earlier work was with people facing institutions that had already made up their minds. She investigated innocence claims, coordinated outreach to victims and families, and managed client interviews on complex cases. That is useful preparation for the part of this job that is not procedural: sitting with someone in the worst week of their academic life and getting a usable account of what happened.

She is particularly focused on first-year students, who tend to arrive in these processes with no idea that the first conversation is the one that matters most.

Rachel was the first in her immediate family to finish high school, graduate from college, and earn a law degree.
